What is lockdown fatigue?
In the UK, we’ve been in some sort of lockdown for a year now and it’s created something called lockdown fatigue. It’s something many of us have been experiencing, but what exactly is it? Well, it’s that feeling of being constantly tired and lethargic – both mentally and physically.
If you’ve been feeling tired, worn out but also restless, you’re probably suffering from lockdown fatigue.
This grogginess actually has a medical name, sleep inertia, and refers to a phase in between sleep and wakefulness when you don’t feel fully awake. You’re likely to feel drowsy and fatigued which leaves you struggling to complete everyday tasks.
What’s causing our lockdown fatigue?
Research has shown that it’s a combination of different factors that is causing this lockdown fatigue.
One issue is that sleep inertia can occur when our brains aren’t properly warmed up before we try and tackle something. But why aren’t our brains ready to kick into gear? Well, we might not be getting the right kind of sleep because of our body’s natural reaction to stress and change.
We recently wrote about why working from home can actually increase stress levels, but there’s also a lot of anxiety around coronavirus generally, and financial problems for many.
Studies done by King’s College London last year showed that following the first lockdown, 50% of those surveyed said their sleep had been poorer than usual, with 39% of people surveyed saying they slept fewer hours a night on average compared with before the lockdown.
Disturbed and reduced sleeping patterns could mean you’re not getting enough quality sleep to feel well rested.
