We spoke previously about lockdown fatigue and the effects that it’s having on us both mentally and physically. And one of the symptoms of lockdown fatigue is brain fog.
What is brain fog?
Brain fog isn’t a specific medical condition but is a general term that can refer to a range of symptoms that affect your cognitive functioning. Symptoms of brain fog can include one or many of the below:
- memory problems
- lack of mental clarity
- poor concentration
- inability to focus
This type of mental fatigue can interfere with work and your daily life commitments but you can overcome it.
What causes brain fog?
Lockdown and the disruption and challenges that it has brought is undoubtedly a factor in so many people experiencing brain fog. But there are other more specific causes of brain fog that aren’t just related to lockdown.
Stress
Chronic stress has many implications in regards to our health and it can affect us in so many different ways. And the brain can be greatly affected by long-term exposure to stress. Stress can cause mental fatigue and can even trigger depression. When your brain is exhausted, it becomes harder to think, reason, and focus. Hence the fogginess.
Lack of quality sleep
Not getting enough quality sleep can affect your mental clarity and function greatly. Studies show that moderate sleep deprivation produces impairments equivalent to those of alcohol intoxication. For example, after 17 hours without sleep, our alertness is similar to the effects of a blood alcohol concentration of 0.05% – a state where your judgment is impaired, and coordination is reduced.
Vitamin/nutrient deficiency
A diet that is lacking in vital vitamins and nutrients can be a cause of brain fog. And even if you have a good diet – some of us just can’t seem to get the vitamins and nutrients out of the food we eat and make them work for us. For example, many people struggle with getting enough vitamin B-12, a vitamin that supports healthy brain function. Therefore a deficiency can bring about brain fog.
Chronic illnesses
Some chronic illness can result in brain fog. Medical conditions associated with inflammation, fatigue, or changes in blood glucose level can cause mental fatigue. Some chronic illnesses that are associated with brain fog include:
- Alzheimer’s
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
