How To Create A Calm Workspace At Home

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, people all over the world have had to adapt to ‘the new normal’ – unexpected changes to our day-to-day that challenge our ways of working, socialising and even living. It’s no surprise that covid-19 lockdowns and forced remote working have a knock-on effect with our mental health, giving rise to feelings of stress, anxiety and depression. Working from home might seem like a necessary evil during these unprecedented times, but in reality, it doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience. At NADclinic, our team of medical experts share some key ways to create a calm and productive workspace at home, helping keep your career or business afloat while also helping maintain, and ideally maximise, your mental wellbeing.

Organise your space

You’ve probably heard the mantra ‘tidy desk, tidy mind’. In the time of coronavirus, it’s no different, where having the right equipment, set-up and even lighting can make all the difference to your motivation and productivity. Working from home during the pandemic can feel like a more relaxed approach to working, but don’t fall into this trap – with a designated office space separate from the places you usually relax, you’ll have a winning mindset.

Top tip: invest in the best office chair you can possibly find. You’ll thank us later.

Get the right ambience

The radio isn’t the only way to create that all-important background noise during the covid-19 quarantine. Instead, use remote working as an opportunity to catch-up on your favourite podcast or try an audiobook. Another great tactic is to have the TV on low, especially if you’re finding it difficult adjusting from a busy office to a quiet apartment. And for those with an outside space (and if weather allows), the sounds of nature are familiar without being off-putting – while indoors, videos of rainfall or the ocean can give your work a backdrop.

Top tip: looping white noise can strike the right balance between sound and silence.

Take regular breaks

In an office environment, breaks at the water cooler make all the difference to your working day, giving your mind a few minutes to reset and helping encourage a little exercise now and then. While having breaks at home during covid-19 lockdown might seem counter-productive, they’re actually crucial, giving your mind and body the chance to ‘stretch’ and even helping you feel motivated and boosting creativity. If you struggle to make time for a tea break, then a walk before or after work, or even on your lunchbreak, can work wonders.

Top tip: if you struggle to find time for a drink, keep a thermos of water on your desk.

Create a routine

When remote working through the pandemic, a routine can ensure you’re being efficient with your time. In fact, at NADclinic, improving your Return On Time – ROT – is something that drives us a business, and is part of our mission to boost human performance and help everyone ‘be your best self’. Whether it’s writing a list, outlining a timetable or setting a few reminders, routine and predictability can actually help you stay on-task and goal-oriented – giving you one less thing to worry about during coronavirus.

Top tip: set out tomorrow’s ambitions today, and get a head-start on your day.

Put yourself first

Whatever your work, it’s all too easy to get into the cycle of picking up emails after-hours, starting the day when you wake up and pulling all-nighters to nail your projects. In reality, this can lead to unfair and unrealistic expectations and can have a huge impact on your mental health. At NADclinic, we’ve beat the burnout ourselves and know that boosting your brain is the key to performing well in sport, work, or everyday life – even if covid-19 remote working has become our ‘new normal’.

Top tip: fuel your body the right way – supplements can give it the boost it needs.
