How to boost your immunity

Boost Your ImmunityYour immune system is an amazing thing – keeping you protected from viruses, pathogens and toxins. But, like any system, it can be put under stress. When that happens, you’re more susceptible to colds and illnesses. So how do you go about boosting & fortifying your immune system and ensuring your body has what it needs to fight infection? We take a look at some of the best ways to boost your immunity.

1) Up your vitamins, minerals & nutrients intake

These are the ‘raw materials’ or building blocks for growth and day-to-day processes within the body. Here are just a few ways they’re useful:

  • Creating and repairing skin, muscle and bone
  • Fuelling red blood cells
  • Regulating chemical signals
  • Bolstering the immune system and helping the healing process

Even though our bodies only need small amounts of these each day, failing to have the right quantities can lead to vitamin deficiencies, which in turn can cause certain diseases. In addition, vitamins are somewhat more ‘fragile’ than minerals, because they’re organic – and their efficacy can be affected by anything from cooking to storage to air exposure. Read our blog here on the key supplements your body needs to boost immunity.

2) Sleep well

Sleep has an enormous effect on our mental and physical health – and yet, a third of us have poor sleep. According to the NHS, regular poor sleep puts you at risk of serious medical conditions such as heart disease and can even cut your life expectancy – as they put it, sleep boosts immunity. To help keep your immune system on track, you need at least 8 hours’ sleep a night, which can be difficult in a 24/7, always-working world. With little sleep, however, comes fatigue, low mood and a lack of focus.

3) Manage stress

Having some stress is your life is unavoidable; observed in both humans and animals, and harking back to our primal days where our ancestors made the decision between ‘fight or flight’, we’re wired up for it. One notable study looked at 300 articles which examined the relationship between stress and the immune system. The findings were clear – all types of stress can affect the immune system.

Acute stressors (lasting minutes) were associated with potentially adaptive upregulation of some parameters of natural immunity and downregulation of some functions of specific immunity. Brief naturalistic stressors (such as exams) tended to suppress cellular immunity while preserving humoral immunity. Chronic stressors [trauma] were associated with suppression of both cellular and humoral measures.
