Our skin is one of the first things people notice about us. After all, it’s our largest organ and accounts for about 16% of our body weight. So it’s only natural to want the healthiest skin possible.
Intrinsic vs extrinsic skin ageing
As we get older, one of the most visible signs of ageing is how our skin changes. It loses its elasticity, becomes thinner and we get lines and creases. Unfortunately, this isn’t something that we can stop from happening completely. It is what’s known as intrinsic ageing.
However, we do have some control over how quickly our skin ages.
Our environment and lifestyle choices can cause our skin to age prematurely – this is known as extrinsic ageing. By taking some preventive actions, we can slow the effects that this type of ageing has on our skin.
Here are some of our tips to help you make simple changes to reduce premature skin ageing.
Wear sunscreen every day
Whilst exposure to the sun helps us get vital vitamin D, being out for longer than 10 minutes unprotected can prematurely age your skin. Wearing sunscreen every day will help protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun. This means during winter too – it may be cold and cloudy and you’ll feel like sunscreen is the last thing on your mind, but harmful UV rays still penetrate your skin during the winter. Pay special attention to your face.
Avoid sunbeds
Sunbeds emit harmful UV rays that accelerate your skin’s ageing and put you at risk of developing skin cancer. If you want a tan, just fake it.
Stop smoking
Smoking greatly speeds up how quickly your skin ages and causes wrinkles along with a dull, sallow complexion. Nicotine and other chemicals in cigarettes cause your blood vessels to narrow, reducing oxygen flow and nutrients to skin cells. Plus, the repetitive motion of smoking causes the skin around your mouth to wrinkle more severely. Which brings us onto our next point…
Avoid repetitive facial expressions
Repeatedly contracting the same muscles over and over causes lines to become permanent which makes you look older. Now we’re not talking about laughter lines, you should laugh as much as possible! But constantly furrowing your brow can cause wrinkles on your forehead and squinting in the sun can cause unnecessary lines around your eyes.
Eat a healthy diet
Research has shown that eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables may help prevent damage that leads to premature skin ageing. Additionally, research has also suggested that a diet containing lots of sugar or other refined carbohydrates can accelerate ageing.
Cut down on alcohol
When we drink alcohol, the body metabolises the alcohol from an enzyme in the liver, which releases a byproduct called acetaldehyde. This byproduct is toxic to body tissues causing dehydration and premature ageing of the skin. Alcohol also causes inflammation and the release of a histamine that dilates the blood’s capillaries causing redness.
