The UK has been in some form of lockdown for over a year now and as restrictions begin to ease and normal life slowly goes back to normal, we’re at real risk of doing too much too soon and becoming burnt out.
Lyndall Farley, a wellbeing coach and sabbatical specialist, said: “We’re creatures of habit, without routine, stress increases and we’re at a heightened risk of burnout. We’ve all been through a huge amount of change recently, and as human beings, we’re not built to be under stress for long periods of time or to deal with constant change.”
Over the past year, we’ve grown accustomed to a slower pace of life. We’ve been working from home, there has been extremely limited socialising and shops all have been closed. But now, many people are starting to make their way back into the office, and pubs, restaurants and shops are all open again leading to increasingly busier schedules. And this can be daunting, not to mention exhausting.
So how do we avoid post-lockdown burnout?
Ease in slowly
Now things are opening up again and the sun is starting to shine, it’s so tempting to start saying yes to everything. Yes to after work drinks, yes to weekend dinner plans, yes to catch ups, meet ups and everything in between! But that is going to cause a quick burnout. Instead, ease yourself in slowly, you don’t have to say yes to every single social invitation.
Make your wellbeing a priority
As we become busier, it’s all too easy to let our wellbeing slip to the bottom of the to-do pile. But in order to avoid burnout, we have to make it a priority. Even just 10 minutes a day is enough to help us defrag, whether that’s meditating, going for a quick walk or simply doing something you love to do.
Try to get good sleep
Sleep is going to be so important as we go back to “normal” life. It’s so important to rest and recharge. But with so many people currently suffering from sleep problems and insomnia, if we don’t try and get our sleep in order, we could really suffer after lockdown.
