Everything you need to know about Glutathione

What is glutathione?

Glutathione is an antioxidant that’s produced in our cells. It’s largely made up of three amino acids: glutamine, glycine, and cysteine.

Antioxidants are substances that help prevent or slow down damage to cells caused by free radicals – unstable molecules that the body produces as a reaction to environmental and other pressures. This damage to our cells is directly linked to the ageing process and so if we can slow down this damage we can in effect, slow down the ageing process. However, there are many more specific benefits of glutathione to know about…

Benefits of glutathione

Reduces oxidative stress

Oxidative stress occurs when there’s an imbalance between the production of the aforementioned free radicals and the body’s ability to fight them off. Too much oxidative stress may be a precursor to multiple diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Glutathione helps reduce the impact of oxidative stress in the body which in turn, could reduce disease.

Could improve skin conditions

Damage to the body isn’t of course only limited to what’s going on inside, but can be apparent on the outside too. Some research into glutathione has found some early indications that it could help with some skin conditions, such as psoriasis, but further research does need to be done in this area. It can also help improve hyperpigmentation, acne scarring and reduce the appearance of sun spots.

May reduce symptoms of Parkinson’s disease

study done in 2000/2001 showed some indication that glutathione injections had positive effects on the symptoms of Parkinson’s, such as tremors and rigidity. While there is unfortunately no cure for Parkinson’s, glutathione may however help reduce symptoms to improve the quality of life in people living with this disease.

Can improve liver function

Glutathione has been shown to improve protein, enzyme, and bilirubin levels in the blood of individuals with alcoholic and nonalcoholic chronic fatty liver disease. And is most effective when administered intravenously. What does this mean? Well, it means that it may be possible to stave off cell death in the liver by supplementation of glutathione with high dose injections.

Could help fight autoimmune diseases

Autoimmune diseases can increase oxidative stress throughout the body because they cause chronic inflammation. These autoimmune diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, and lupus. Because glutathione helps reduce oxidative stress by either stimulating or reducing the body’s immunological response, the antioxidant can lessen the severity of these diseases and could help manage the symptoms by protecting the cell mitochondria.

How can you boost glutathione levels?

While it is produced naturally by the body, glutathione levels decline as we age but can also be affected by a number of factors, including poor nutrition, environmental toxins, and stress. So supplementation can be done to get the levels back up where they need to be. You can take oral glutathione tablets or it can be applied topically, or as an inhalant. However, the most effective way to administer glutathione is intravenously through a glutathione injection.
