Will Quitting Smoking Improve My Skin?

Quitting smoking is a common New Year’s resolution for many and whilst stubbing out the cigarettes for good does wonders for you internally, namely your lungs and cardiovascular system, how it affects your outward appearance sometimes gets overlooked.

But to put it bluntly, quitting smoking improves your appearance. Specifically, your skin.

Among other things, smoking restricts the blood flow to many parts of the body, including the skin, a huge organ that needs consistent blood flow to thrive. When you quit smoking your blood flow improves and your skin receives more oxygen and nutrients, resulting in an overall more healthier complexion.

Smoking leads to the premature development of wrinkles in many people, not just around your face, but also in other areas of your body, including your inner arms. This is because the chemicals can damage collagen and elastin, which are the parts of your skin that give it a youthful look and help it to bounce back.

However, studies have shown that when you quit smoking, not only does your skin become more resistant to premature ageing, but your skin’s biological age actually improves. And it does so relatively quickly, sometimes as quickly as within the first three months. Crucially, this improvement is maintained for at least nine months after you quit smoking.

If you stay tobacco-free, the discolouration on your fingers and nails will also disappear.
