The safest ways to lose your lockdown weight gain

If you’ve found that you’ve put on a few (or more than a few) pounds over the various lockdown periods we’ve had to endure, don’t worry, you’re not alone. With gyms shut and government guidelines outlining that we’re only supposed to leave the house once a day to exercise, it’s natural that we’ve put on some weight. And if you’re constantly working from home, snacks and treats are only ever a couple of steps away!

If you’ve been rewarding ourselves for a hard day of homeschooling, working, looking after kids or all of the above, with a large glass of wine, a take away and everything else in between – the weight is likely to have crept up on you.

If you’re looking to get healthier before summer approaches, here are some of our tips on the safest way to lose the lockdown weight.

Banish the snacks

Boredom, convenience and stress eating all leads to snacking. You may be eating well-balanced, nutritious meals but are you aware of how many calories you’re consuming in snack form? The best way to stop snacking is just to banish them from your reach or replace them with healthy alternatives such as fruit or even just a glass of water.

Manage stress

These are very stressful times but one of the best things we can do to improve our health is try to reduce and manage our stress levels. Stress causes the body to release a hormone called cortisol and the more of this we have in our body, the more negative effects it causes. And one of these effects is weight gain. This is because cortisol stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, and stimulates insulin release and maintenance of blood sugar levels. The end result of these actions can be an increase in appetite and can cause cravings for sweet, high-fat, and salty foods. Cortisol exposure can also increase visceral fat—the fat surrounding our organs.

Up your daily steps

Exercising is a great way to stay in shape, but if you’re working out 3-4 times a week and still not shifting the weight, it might be time to up your daily step count. There are 168 hours in a week and if you’re only active for 4 of them, that’s 164 hours where you’re not really moving much. Try and get out on a walk once a day and if you’re working from home, taking a break to stretch and wander round the house can help you get your daily step count up.

Boost your metabolism

Your metabolism is key to your weight loss/gain. And right now, your metabolism is probably feeling a little like you are – sluggish. By boosting your metabolism it means your body burns more calories effectively but how do you achieve this? Protein-rich meals help give it a boost, as does drinking more water but to really kick your metabolism into gear, our NAD+ Fat Burning IV Drip Therapy is the ideal solution.
