NAD+ and COVID-19

By now we’re all too familiar with seasonal bugs and viruses and the effect they have on the human body. Affecting the respiratory system, those with underlying health conditions and the eldery are at greater risk of developing severe complications and potentially dying due to impaired immune function, cytokine storm and defective respiratory function.

Vitamin D research

Studies have shown that vitamin D supplementation is not only beneficial for bone density and health, but can also help protect against acute respiratory infections and seasonal viruses. While it may seem overly-simplistic to some that a vitamin could help protect against colds and seasonal bugs, vitamin D is actually more than just what we think of as a “vitamin.” It’s actually an essential hormone we all need to ensure a properly functioning immune system.

NAD+ levels & typical winter viruses

Now, further research and studies have suggested that depleted levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), another essential molecule we need to live healthily, could be contributing to the severity of respiratory focused viruses and typical seasonal bugs and how our body responds to them.

NAD+ helps with energy production in our cells and is associated with DNA repair, chemical stress and inflammation. There are many positive studies that support the use of NAD+ supplements to help reduce the symptoms of things like high blood pressure, heart problems and immunity issues.

As we know, the mortality rate of winter viruses increases dramatically with age. And many physiological changes occur with ageing, including the decline of cardiac output, impairments in the lungs and a reduction in immune function. As we age, we naturally produce less NAD+ and this decline is believed to be a huge risk for diseases, cognitive dysfunction, auto-immunity, and dysregulation of the immune response.

This suggests that nutritional support with NAD+ could minimise the severity of respiratory symptoms if administered prophylactically and/or therapeutically.

What does this mean in the fight against winter bugs?

While there is no suggestion that taking NAD+ supplements or IVs could in any way stop us from catching or spreading seasonal bugs and viruses, the research indicates that increasing our NAD+ levels could potentially help lessen the severity of these symptoms, especially in people with underlying health conditions and the elderly, and reduce or reverse any long-term damage associated with these bugs.
