Our bodies do a fantastic job of getting rid of waste and keeping us functioning in a healthy and efficient way, however, sometimes we just need to give our bodies a helping hand and bit of a boost in the form of a detox.
Different types of toxins
We’re exposed to so many different types of toxins, and some we even create ourselves, so it’s no wonder we sometimes need a detox. Here are just a few of the different types of toxins we’re likely to encounter throughout our day-to-day life.
Environmental toxins
These toxins include things such as air pollution, radiation, pesticides – often things we don’t really have much control over. But environmental toxins also refer to the types of cleaning products we use, and things like cosmetics and toiletries.
Lifestyle toxins
Lifestyle toxins refer to everything we put into our bodies. So things like sugar, prescription or recreational drugs, junk food, alcohol, caffeine and tobacco.
Metabolic toxins
Our bodies undertake a range of metabolic processes that include breaking down things like proteins, sugars, and fats. But this process naturally produces toxic waste and when our diet doesn’t contain enough nutrients, the toxins start to build up in the body.
Emotional toxins
We can’t forget about the emotional toxins that daily life produces. Things like stress, fear and PTSD can affect you both physically and mentally in a highly detrimental way.
Signs your body needs a detox
When your body needs a detox, it can manifest in a variety of ways which may mean you don’t spot the signs. But if you’ve found yourself suffering from any one of the below, or maybe a combination of a couple, it could be that your body is in need of a detox…
Weight gain
If you’re not happy with the direction the numbers are going on the scales yet you’re exercising and eating the right foods, it could be a sign that your body needs a detox. A lot of toxins are lipophilic which means they’re stored in body fat. Lipophilic toxins contain pesticides and dioxins which cause the body to produce more fat cells in order to store more toxins in it resulting in annoying weight gain.
Insomnia
A sudden onset of sleep struggles such as insomnia or a lack of good quality sleep could mean you’ve got an imbalance. And it could be related to cortisol. Cortisol levels in healthy people are high in the morning and drop progressively throughout the day. But when there’s an imbalance in cortisol, the cortisol levels in the evening become heightened which means you struggle to sleep.
Brain fog
Struggling with focus? Suffering from a real lack of mental clarity? Maybe you’re getting distracted mid way through a train of thought? Toxins can affect the brain directly and if you’re constantly spacing out during the day for no particular reason then high toxification may be the reason.
Extreme fatigue
If you feel as though you’re getting enough hours of sleep, but still feel constantly exhausted you may need a detox. When your body has an excess amount of toxins, it creates a lot of stress for your adrenal glands. A long-term toxic load can lead to adrenal fatigue which makes you feel exhausted and sleepy. Additionally, you’ll probably be consuming excess caffeine to try and get your energy back which actually will make the situation worse in the long-term.
Immunity issues
If you’re constantly feeling run down or getting little colds or illnesses here and there your immune system could be buckling under the weight of toxins.
