What Happens To Your Body When You Stop Drinking?

Whether you want to take part in Dry January or you want to quit the booze for good, what happens to your body when you quit drinking?

Someone who drinks minimally, but chooses to do Dry January, may not feel a huge difference physically but rather a sense of control over their health and a sense of accomplishment from achieving a set goal. However, those who drink heavily and decide to stop could notice more pronounced physiologic effects, such as more mental clarity, better sleep, weight loss, and feeling the ‘detox’ sensation, as well as the sense of accomplishment.

Here are five changes you’ll see by cutting out the alcohol:

Liver relief

Cirrhosis of the liver can occur over time in those who drink excessively but because the liver is what is known as a tolerant organ, changes to the liver can be reversed. Positive changes can occur within just weeks of stopping drinking and the liver can focus on other important jobs such as breaking down other toxins produced by the body, metabolising fats and excess hormones.

Weight loss

Depending on what your drink of choice is, cutting out alcohol can see you drop some pounds. An absence of alcohol in your diet, especially for heavy drinkers, can lead to weight loss, improvement in body composition, less stomach fat and improvement in triglycerides.

Boosted brain function

Heavy drinkers often have some specific disorders of the brain which are due to excess alcohol drinking but even moderate long-term drinking can reduce memory and concentration. Brain fog is real when it comes to alcohol and so cutting it out should leave you sharper and with more clarity.

Improved sleep

Alcohol interferes with your sleep-wake cycles and whilst passing out after a heavy night of drinking is all too easy, the quality of your sleep is actually poorer. Detoxing from alcohol can give you some sleep troubles at first but in the long-term your sleep will improve.

Better skin

Alcohol causes inflammation, reduces collagen levels and dehydrates the skin. All things that contribute to a saggy and sallow complexion. When you stop drinking, you gradually restore elasticity to the skin, and redness and yellowing of the skin and around the eyes slowly disappears. The result? A brighter, more youthful complexion.
