Signs You Could Be Vitamin C Deficient

Why do we need vitamin C?

Vitamin C is such an important and essential nutrient when it comes to our health. It’s needed for the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of the body. We use vitamin C to create an important protein that our body uses to make skin, tendons, ligaments, and blood vessels.

We also need enough vitamin C to enable us to heal any minor wounds and form scar tissue.

What causes vitamin C deficiency?

The most common causes of vitamin C deficiency are poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption, eating disorders, severe mental illness, smoking, and health related therapies such as dialysis.

What happens when your vitamin C is low?

If you prolonged low levels of vitamin C deficiency then it can lead to something called scurvy.

Scurvy is an ailment that has been recorded as far back as ancient Greek and Egyptian times although it is mostly associated with 15th to 18th century sailors who suffered with vitamin C deficiency due to a lack of fresh produce on long sea voyages. Modern cases of scurvy are rare but it can still affect people who don’t consume enough vitamin C.

Some of the most common symptoms of a vitamin C deficiency include:

Skin problems

Because vitamin C plays such a key role in collagen production, low levels can cause rough bumpy skin and even develop into a skin condition called keratosis pilaris.

Collagen is needed for plump, youthful skin and so when the body doesn’t produce enough, it can leave skin looking dryer, older and more wrinkled. Additionally, vitamin C helps to keep skin healthy by protecting it from oxidative damage caused by the sun and exposure to pollutants – without it, skin is more likely to become damaged.

Hair abnormalities

Vitamin C deficiency can cause hair to grow in bent or coiled shapes because of abnormalities in the protein structure of hair as it grows. You might find this hard to detect as your hair tends to be weaker and more easily breaks.

Sore, swollen joints

Those with vitamin C deficiency may find that they have painful joints that can become swollen. Again, this is due to the deficiency causing a lack of collagen to be produced, something you find a lot in the joints of the body.

Concave nails

Thin, brittle nails that are concave or spoon-shaped are a common side effect of vitamin C deficiency.

Slow to heal wounds

As we mentioned before, vitamin C is vital in helping to form scar tissue and heal minor wounds. Low levels of vitamin C can cause wounds to heal more slowly and in chronic causes, you may find that older wounds reopen.

Increased bruises

Vitamin C deficiency can cause weak blood vessels which are easily ruptured which can cause your body to easily bruise.

Weak immune system

Vitamin C deficiency is associated with poor immunity and a higher risk of infection.

How to increase your vitamin C levels quickly
