NAD In The News: From Coronavirus To Skincare

At NADclinic, based near Harley Street, we’re leading the charge in revolutionary NAD+ treatments, powering every cell and helping optimise brain and body with a range of tailored IV infusions and injections. But there’s still much to learn about this incredible molecule. Here are some of the latest scientific findings and suggestions.

  1. NAD could ‘reprogram’ your sleep

Metabolic disease and low levels of NAD+ have been linked to disruption of our natural sleeping patterns as we age. One study suggests that taking NAD+ supplements can help ‘reprogram’ metabolism – which could therefore give ‘better’ sleep. The study looked at mice and night-time activity. [Source]

‘’We reveal that supplementation with the NAD+ precursor nicotinamide riboside (NR) markedly reprograms metabolic and stress-response pathways that decline with aging’’.

  1. Study supports that NAD boosts immunity

Researchers have found that covid-19 can disrupt the normal production of NAD+ in the body. A study shows that the virus affects the gene set that controls NAD, slowly depleting levels over time. The data suggests that immunity and NAD are linked, and immunity could be more effective with higher levels of NAD. [Source]

‘’A new preclinical study found that SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19… dysregulates nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) synthesis and utilization… ‘Our data says that the innate immune defense against viral infection depends on NAD and that it may be more effective at higher NAD’”.

  1. Could NAD prevent vision loss?

Researchers from Trinity College, Dublin, have discovered that a protein (SARM1) which has been found to denegerate neuronal cells (brain cells) may also be involved in retinal degeneration (a condition which leads to vision loss). The findings show that SARM1 depletes NAD within photoreceptor cells (which help us see), suggesting that NAD is linked to good vision. [Source]

‘’’SARM1 is known to mediate neuronal cell degeneration through depletion of essential metabolite NAD and induction of energy crisis,’ write the investigators.’’

  1. NAD: coming soon to your skincare regime?

The Research & Development team at The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. have been studying skin defense and anti-ageing. They discovered that a family of proteins called sirtuins (which play a part in metabolism and stress) could increase skin fibroblast activity – a type of connective tissue that plays a part in wound healing and can help combat ageing. These sitruins have been shown to be dependent on NAD, so by extension, this suggests that NAD could have an effect on ageing of the skin. [Source]

‘’There has been increasing evidence that demonstrated the importance of Sirtuins in longevity, metabolism, and control of stress. Sirtuins are evolutionary well-conserved proteins… [which] function primarily as NAD-dependent deacetylases [enzymes]’’.

  1. Boosting NAD could prevent coronavirus spreading in cells

In a mice study, research shows that boosting levels of NAD can boost the activity of protective enzymes called PARPs, helping reduce coronavirus replication. The virus has shown to deplete levels of NAD+, which repair inflammatory DNA damage in the lungs, in turn worsening cell survival and inhibiting immune cells from fighting the virus effectively. [Source]

‘’The team also confirmed that the activity of antiviral PARP enzymes, key to a strong innate immune response, were upregulated by boosting NAD+… deplete[d] NAD+ levels in the cell weakens PARPs, allowing the virus greater opportunity to replicate.’’
