How to help a loved one struggling with addiction

Having a loved one who is living with addiction can leave you worried and wondering how you can help. Whilst it’s not always easy to make the decision to try to help someone who has an addiction, your loved one will have a greater chance of overcoming addiction with your support. But remember, they have to recognise they have a problem and want to get help.

Of course, every situation is unique, as everyone has a different background, life story and factors that have led them to where they are now. However, there are some general guidelines that can help.

Things to focus on

1. Trust

A loved one is more likely to want your help if they know they can trust you and feel safe sharing with you.

2. Honesty

Tell your loved one how you’re feeling and be honest about your concerns.

3. Respecting privacy

Remember to keep boundaries in mind. Your loved one may not be ready to share everything with you right now but that’s okay – first steps are first steps.

Things to avoid

1. Threatening language

If your loved one feels attacked they’re less likely to open up to you and accept your help. Keep communication calm and as loving as possible.

2. Criticism

Your loved one doesn’t need to hear everything they’re doing wrong. Chances are they are already fully aware of that and reminding them of their perceived failings will simply cause tension.

3. Expecting immediate change

Addiction is hard to overcome and nobody gets better overnight. It can be a long process and you need to be prepared for that.

Challenges you’re likely to face

Keep in mind that the road to recovery is never a straight line and you’re likely to face obstacles along the way. Many of these will come directly from your loved one and could include:

  • They may not be ready to recognise they have a problem
  • They may not be ready to get better
  • They may feel shame and fear about those around them finding out
  • They may have underlying problems which need addressing such as mental health issues

Overcoming addiction requires great willpower and determination but with support, love and understanding, your loved one has a greater chance of recovery with you by their side. And remember, you can’t do it all on your own. Seeking the help of professionals is always a good idea.

NAD+ detox programme

With the help of expert clinicians, life coaches and nutritionists, we have put together a targeted detox infusion programme that can help your loved one overcome their addiction. Whether it’s prescription drugs, recreational drugs or alcohol, we can help you give someone you love a real chance at getting their life back.

Our NAD+ detox therapy programme can be delivered in-clinic or we can arrange for home visits. We offer two different packages depending on the needs of the person: Essential or Optimum.

How NAD+ infusion therapy helps recovery:

  • Rids the body of toxins caused by drugs and alcohol to detox the system
  • Reduces withdrawal effects to make the detox process more comfortable
  • Curbs the cravings for drugs and alcohol both physically and mentally

Increasing NAD+ levels also leaves you more alert, more mentally sharp and generally more energised making the detox process that little bit easier.
