The most recent statistics released by the government has revealed that an estimated 1.2 million people in the UK are experiencing long COVID symptoms. That’s just under 2% of the entire population.
Long COVID is classified as symptoms persisting for more than four weeks after the first suspected coronavirus (COVID-19) infection that are not attributed to anything else.
Last March we published an article highlighting the effects of long COVID and how the UK Government was being asked to do more to recognise and support those affected by the long-term effects of COVID-19. And with the latest data that’s been released, it’s clear people are still struggling.
The symptoms of long COVID
People have reported various mental and physical symptoms including extreme fatigue, insomnia, brain fog, and muscle aches. According to the latest data fatigue continues to be the most common symptom reported at 54%. 28% of people also reported difficulty concentrating.
How are people affected by long COVID?
Long COVID remains greatest in females aged 35 to 69 years, but can affect anyone. And it can have a really damaging effect on their day-to-day lives.
64% of people with long COVID symptoms reported that it adversely affected their day-to-day activities whilst 19% reported that their ability to undertake their day-to-day activities had been “limited a lot.”
Fast track your recovery with NAD+
A study into whether glutathione and NAD+ precursors can restore metabolic function and thus aid the recovery of COVID‐19 patients has found that plasma levels of proteins and metabolites associated with inflammation and antioxidant metabolism are significantly improved in patients treated with these combined metabolic activators as compared to placebo. The results show that treating patients infected with COVID‐19 with this combination leads to a more rapid symptom‐free recovery, suggesting a role for such a therapeutic regime in the therapy of infections leading to respiratory problems.
Additionally, another study has shown that the molecular pathology pathway of COVID-19 is associated with the inhibition of SIRT1 activity that may be related to inflammatory processes. SIRT1 activity is regulated by NAD+ so by increasing NAD+ levels in the body, it promotes normal SIRT1 activity which can lessen the severity of inflammation and symptoms associated with COVID-19.
