A few months ago, nobody would have guessed that the entire world – businesses, institutions, people – would grind to a complete halt, owing to the coronavirus pandemic. The spread of covid-19 has infected over 6 million people and affected billions more, but one group of people dealing with the disease in an unprecedented way is those living with, or susceptible to, certain medical conditions.
Who is most at risk of coronavirus?
According to the WHO (World Health Organisation), ”people of all ages can be infected”. However, there are a range of people with pre-existing medical conditions whom the WHO says ”appear to more vulnerable to becoming severely ill”. These include those with asthma, diabetes and heart disease.
What about those with cancer?
Cancer Research UK made headlines in June with a special report, which anticipated that around 24,000 cases of cancer have gone undiagnosed during coronavirus. On their own website, they say that those with cancer ”are among those at higher risk of complications”, as the disease, and treatments such as chemotherapy, can ”weaken their immune systems”. In this context, they recognise vulnerable people as those:
- having chemotherapy
- having radical radiotherapy for lung cancer
- with cancers of the blood or bone marrow such as leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma who are at any stage of treatment
- having immunotherapy or other continuing antibody treatments for cancer
- having other targeted cancer treatments which can affect the immune system, such as protein kinase inhibitors or PARP inhibitors
- who have had bone marrow or stem cell transplants in the last 6 months, or who are still taking immunosuppression drugs
Why are cancer patients more at risk?
The body’s immune system guards against infections and illnesses, including cancer. But those who are fighting certain types of cancer, such as leukaemia, may have a weakened immune system – and for people undergoing chemotherapy, the treatment can prevent bone marrow from making white blood cells.
What about those with diabetes, heart disease and asthma?
- Diabetes.org states that those with diabetes and coronavirus are more at risk of developing complications from serious blood sugar highs and lows
- The case is the same for people with heart disease – the British Heart Foundation says “anyone with a heart condition is considered at increased risk of more severe complications of covid-19”.
- Finally, US body, CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), notes that the virus ”can affect your respiratory tract (nose, throat, lungs), cause an asthma attack, and possibly lead to pneumonia and acute respiratory disease”.
