NAD+ IV therapy is used to improve many aspects of our mental and physical health and wellbeing. From improving energy levels and concentration, to promoting healthy ageing and optimal cellular function, NAD+ really is a phenomenal molecule.
And one of the most recent revelations about NAD+ is that it could be a way of improving fertility.
Those who experience issues with their fertility go through an extremely stressful, exhausting and costly journey that affects their mind and body. But could NAD+ be a natural and more holistic approach to fertility problems?
How ageing affects fertility
As women get older, it becomes more difficult for them to naturally conceive. But why? Well women’s oocytes, which are cells in the ovary, are highly responsible for reproductive health and fertility. Once a woman reaches over the age of 35, the quality of their oocytes begins to decrease and there are fewer eggs remaining. These eggs can be somewhat less viable and smaller. Additionally with age, women may develop health conditions that may reduce fertility. One of the drawbacks of traditional fertility treatments for women who are struggling to conceive is that they don’t get to the root of the problem. For example, in vitro fertilisation (IVF) cannot improve egg quality or reverse age-related defects so the only alternative for older women at present is to use eggs donated by younger women.
How NAD+ may improve fertility
Scientists have discovered that increasing NAD+ levels in mice improved the quality of eggs with defects due to ageing.
The researchers showed that “reversing an age-dependent decline in NAD(P)H restores oocyte quality, embryo development, and functional fertility in aged mice. These findings may be relevant to reproductive medicine.” Their findings concluded that NAD+ synthesis is essential to oocyte function, both of which decline with age and that increasing NAD+ levels could also improve the success of IVF treatment.
While it hasn’t been tested in humans, the mice trials show promising results that may be replicated in adult women.
Is NAD+ therapy the right fertility for me?
Before you look to NAD+ IV therapy to help with your fertility, it’s important to speak with your doctor and identify why you may be having problems in the first place. There are many different reasons why a woman may be infertile with the largest contributors being age, body weight, smoking habits, STDs, and alcohol use. Additionally, it may not be down to the woman at all. In heterosexual relationships, infertility can be caused by either the man or the woman. So it’s important you really understand why you’re having trouble conceiving.
By identifying what could be impacting your inability to conceive with the help of a healthcare professional, you’ll be able to determine whether NAD+ therapy is for you. If it’s due to ageing, then NAD+ IV therapy could be a natural route to try.
