NAD+ is essential for human life. It plays multiple roles in performing important functions and in maintaining our physical and mental health. NAD+ plays a vital role in the generation of energy in our body through redox reactions.
It enables the transformation of energy from fatty acids and carbohydrates to the mitochondria. The mitochondria are regarded as the “powerhouses” of the cells which convert this energy into cellular energy, which is then utilised in performing all the functions of the body at the cellular level. When cells are exposed to a NAD deficient environment, their structure change or they simply die and are disposed of by the body.
The fact of the matter is that without either form of this molecule, we wouldn’t be able to lead fruitful lives, let alone survive. NAD+ is the oxidated form of the molecule, it is able to take electrons from the molecules in foods that you eat. After taking these electrons, it donates them to the mitochondria in your cells, to be utilised as energy.
